Restore the Soil First
Years of chemical fertilisers, pesticides and fungicides can leave farmland tired and lifeless. Before chasing a harvest, Rickey’s first job is to bring the soil itself back to life.
Our growing philosophy
At Rickeys Alkaline Farm, the growing journey starts with the soil. We place exceptional importance on the environment in which our crops grow — an approach centred on enhanced nutrient-rich soil, attentive cultivation and purposeful growing practices.
Why we care about soil
Healthy soil plays an essential role in supporting plant development. Its structure, water availability, organic matter and nutrient balance all shape the environment roots grow in.
Nature can take hundreds, even thousands, of years to build just two inches of rich topsoil. Rickey’s approach aims to bring tired ground back to life within a year or two, so it can grow food the way it’s meant to taste.
Healthy soil grows healthy food. Healthy food builds a healthy body and a healthy mind, and healthy people build a healthy community.
The Rickeys growing approach
Years of chemical fertilisers, pesticides and fungicides can leave farmland tired and lifeless. Before chasing a harvest, Rickey’s first job is to bring the soil itself back to life.
Rickey looks to the forest, where soil builds itself naturally. He brings that living forest biology into the beds so the ground can rebuild its own fertility.
Deep woodchip mulch covers the beds, protecting the soil, holding moisture and feeding the life underground as it breaks down. Crops grow side by side, the way they would in nature.
When Natural England tested the soil here, Rickey says they were so impressed they asked him to show them how he develops it, and he has the moment on video.

Understanding our name
Alkaline is central to our farm's identity and growing philosophy. It reflects the selection of produce we choose to grow and the cultivation methods behind it.
Please confirm: what “alkaline” means at Rickeys (soil pH, crop selection, an alkaline-diet philosophy, or a mix)
We talk honestly about how we grow. We don't claim our produce changes the body's pH or treats any health condition.
